George Mashurin’s letters bring monastic counsel to readers facing sorrow, temptation, discouragement, and the need to begin again. Remembered as the Recluse of Zadonsk, he addresses humility, prayer, endurance, forgiveness, and hope in Christ with directness. The correspondence offers a compact introduction to a less familiar Russian spiritual writer, retaining the personal character that makes letters different from a systematic treatise.
