Bring the questions of ordinary life to the Optina letters.
Prayer, family, suffering, and Christian life give this collection of Saint Macarius’s correspondence its breadth. The letters allow readers to see how an elder’s guidance responds to particular circumstances outside the monastery. Their personal form encourages patient reading: notice the concern being addressed before drawing out its counsel. This substantial English volume offers a broad starting point for readers who want to spend time with Macarius.
